Tax matters: challenge tax assessments and tax bills

Tax notices can only be challenged within short, strict deadlines. A notice that is not properly challenged in time becomes final, even when it is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to challenge a tax bill?
The standard deadline is 60 days from service, suspended during the August court holiday. It is a strict time limit: once it has passed, the notice becomes final whether or not it is correct.
Is it always worth appealing?
No. Instalments, self-correction or a simplified settlement are often quicker and cheaper. The first assessment is there to work out which route makes sense, and sometimes the answer is not to appeal.
What if the notice was not served properly?
A defect in service can be decisive, but it must be raised in the right way and within the right time. Keep the envelope and every document you received: that is often where the evidence lies.
Can I stop an enforcement procedure that has already started?
There are ways to suspend it, through the courts or through the administration, subject to specific conditions. Time is short in these situations, so it is best to act straight away.
